Fiber Development and Fiber Bionics

The sphere of activity of the Fiber Development and Fiber Bionics competency is the development of new and raw materials that are processed to fibers and filaments with a melt-spinning technology. The successful cooperation of FIBRE and FIB (Fiber International Bremen) guarantees that research results can be turned into innovations and products within a short period of time.

In accordance with the FIBRE strategy plan, the new competency of Fiber Development and Fiber Bionics was established in May 2004. One task of this competency is to develop innovative output substances and technologies for fibers and fiber technologies. By taking advantage of the properties of these new materials and technologies, fibers are to be manufactured for application in e.g. safety technologies or in the industry as reinforcement materials. Bionic principles continue to be researched and applied in order to optimize the composition, manufacture and use of these fibers for the required application. The Fiber Development and Fiber Bionics competency also deals with the post-modification of fibers. As the result of such changes, e.g. of the fiber surface, the fiber properties can be specifically modified for the required application.

This competency has a melt-spinning unit available for the manufacture of fibers. This unit makes it possible to spin different fusible polymers at various spinning parameters. The attached fiber analysis that can be made at the FIBRE Test Center determines the fiber properties. These "short paths" guarantee an evaluation of the best spin parameters within a very short period of time. The Fiber Development and Fiber Bionics competency will start operating a Technikum melt-spinning unit towards the end of 2006 which will enable even polymers to be spun at several kilograms per hour. This larger melt-spinning unit will then ensure a transfer from laboratory to Technikum standards.

A result of the close cooperation between the Fiber Development and Fiber Bionics competency and the FIB (Fiber International Bremen) is a fast and reliable implementation of research results in the area of fiber development and innovative products.
