Faserinstitut Bremen

50 years of fiber expertise at the Faserinstitut: In the course of its history, the Faserinstitut has set standards in fiber measurement and has become established worldwide with its high quality and conduction of cotton round trials.

The institute has been closely cooperating with the University of Bremen since 1989 and actively carries out research. Its main areas of activity today are the development of manufacturing technologies and high-performance composite fiber materials for aircraft construction as well as natural fiber-reinforced polymers for technical applications. The development of new fibers, production methods and fiber applications as well as the provision of modern, online testing methods complete the Institute's range of services.

  • 1955: Founding of the Baumwoll-Faser-Labor (Cotton Fiber Laboratory) at the Bremen Cotton Exchange, first Laboratory Head is Dipl.-Ing. Fritz Hadwich
  • 1965: Founding of the Woll-Labor e.V. (Wool Laboratory)
  • 1969: Founding of Faserinstitut Bremen e.V. and consolidation of the activities of the Cotton Laboratory and Wool Laboratory. The Faserinstitut gains international recognition as a test laboratory with its worldwide introduction of cotton trials.
  • 1989: Signing of a cooperation agreement with the University of Bremen. Main aspects of this agreement are scientific cooperation and joint appointment of an institute director for Faserinstitut Bremen e.V. and a professorship for Subject Area 12 (material technology, composite fiber materials and special fibers) in the field of production technology. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Helmuth Harig is appointed Institute Director. In addition to the test laboratory, the workgroups of Measurement Technology (today: competency area of Test Method Development) and Natural Fibers (today: competency area of Biobased Materials / Sustainability) are created.
  • 2001: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Axel S. Herrmann becomes the successor of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Harig.
  • 2002: The future-oriented alignment and setup of the Faserinstitut is developed in a 1 1/2 year strategy process.
  • December 2003: The organizational structure of FIBRE is adapted to the final results of the strategy process: The area of Composites: Structures and Process Development is included in the organizational structure as an additional competency.
  • Sept. 2005: The Faserinstitut concentrates all of its activities on the University of Bremen campus location (Am Biologischen Garten 2, Building IW3)
