Founded in 1969, the Faserinstitut Bremen e.V. (FIBRE) is a nonprofit scientific institute specializing in fiber-plastic composites as well as synthetic and natural fibers for technical textiles. The goal of the research is to promote the industrial use of these material classes and to contribute to product sustainability by fully exploiting their outstanding property potential. To this end, a fundamental understanding of materials is applied to the development of new materials, process technologies, (lightweight) designs, and testing, measurement, and monitoring methods. This is made possible by an interdisciplinary team of over 60 international staff members who combine diverse expertise in the engineering sciences with specializations in chemistry, physics, and computer science.
Research is conducted through publicly funded basic and applied research projects. In this context, FIBRE collaborates with its network of outstanding regional, national, and international partners from industry and academia. FIBRE also offers its industry partners direct support for materials science research and customized development services.
As a research institute at the University of Bremen, linked to the university through a cooperation agreement and a cooperative professorship (head of the institute), FIBRE is committed to academic education and represents the field of Materials Science, Fiber-Reinforced Composites, and Lightweight Construction in its teaching and in its engagement with the interested public.
To ensure the best possible connectivity, FIBRE’s offices, laboratories, and technical facilities are located both on the University of Bremen campus and at the ECOMAT Research and Technology Center in Bremen. Additional locations include the Baumwollbörse (natural fiber testing), the DLR site in Bremen (liquid hydrogen laboratory), and the Stade Technology Center.
