The competence field Structural Design and Manufacturing Technologies (SF) is dedicated to the design and manufacture of fiber composite structures for lightweight construction applications.

Compsite Design

The material- and load-fair construction must be considered with the development of fiber composite applications suitable for lightweight construction. The design of the outer form and that of the inner fiber architecture must be adapted to the respective local component requirements. The research expertise includes:

  • Design of load-optimised fibre-composite structures
  • Development of efficient load introduction elements and reinforcements
  • Solution concepts for material-hybrid construction

Manufacturing Technologies

The optimization of established and development of new manufacturing processes for duromer and thermoplastic fiber composites is being pushed ahead. The processing of material combinations and the linking of different processes play an increasingly important role in this context. Selected technologies are:

  • Tailored fibre placements
  • Hybrid laminates
  • Thermoforming and Overmoulding
  • 3D-printing of continuous fibre reinforced thermoplastics
  • Continuous preforming and pultrusion
