Fibre and Material Development

The development of new engineering fibers and materials for fiber composites represents an important research area at the Faserinstitut. In the competence field of fiber and material development (FM) these research activities are bundled. Their implementation can be based on decades of expertise in the field of fiber and material characterization, state-of-the-art equipment for the production of chemical fibers and numerous partnerships with material and fiber manufacturers.

Current research topics include the development of functional fibers, the characterization and use of recycled carbon fibers, the development of a precursor for lignin-based carbon fibers, the modification of fibers and plastics for use in fiber composites, and the use of bast fibers and cotton in technical textiles and fiber reinforced plastics.

For the development of new technical fibers, the competence field includes a bi-component melt spinning plant on a pilot plant scale:

  • For a temperature range up to 400 °C with twin-screw extruder, high-temperature draw filed up to 350 °C and a through put up to 15 kg/h
  • Different nozzle geometries for core/sheath, ´hollow and solid fibres
  • Spinning tester for a first material screening
  • Direct access to the modern plastics and fibre laboratory
