The Institute

The Faserinstitut Bremen was founded in 1969 and has been run since 2001 by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Axel S. Herrmann. As a scientific institution at the University of Bremen, it undertakes research and development tasks in the fields of fibers and fiber composite materials with approximately 60 employees and is active in teaching.

The institute operates a technical center as well as an accredited materials laboratory and handles both application and basic questions. Research focuses on new construction methods and manufacturing processes for structures made of fiber composite materials, the material science development and characterization of new fibers, technical textiles, polymers and fiber composites of natural and carbon fibers as well as the development of test methods.

Due to the interdisciplinarity of the topic fiber composites, the fiber institute is connected with numerous research institutions and industrial partners throughout Germany and is active in successful networks.

The Faserinstitut Bremen is a registered association and has a board of trustees. A knowledge-based advisory board with top-class members from research and industry advises the institute on a regular basis.

The Management Board consists of Prof. Dr.- Ing. Axel S. Herrmann (chairman and director of the institute), Axel Drieling and Christoph Hoffmeister.
