Manufacturing and Joining Processes for Fiber-Plastic Composites and Their Hybrids
The Manufacturing Technology research area investigates manufacturing and joining processes for fiber-reinforced plastic composites and their hybrids. Through an in-depth understanding of materials and processes, both are optimally coordinated to increase process speed, reproducibility, and robustness, as well as resource efficiency. A particular focus is on manufacturing processes for thermoplastic fiber-reinforced composites (automated fiber placement, thermoforming) and corresponding joining technologies such as welding (ultrasonic and resistance welding), overmolding via injection molding, and inductive heating—for example, for repairs. In the field of thermoset fiber-reinforced composites, winding, pultrusion, and liquid composite molding processes are examined. Extensive expertise is also available in the area of stitching technologies for highly topology-optimized components. Thus, FIBRE covers key process chains from the fiber to the component.
